The viral illness called Fifth Disease is going around our elementary school. It is common in kids ages 5-15. It is known for a rash that makes a child's cheeks bright red --sometimes called the "slapped cheek" rash. The signs and symptoms are a low fever, headache and stuffy or runny nose. After these symptoms are gone, the rash on cheeks, arms, legs and trunk appear. It starts out blotchy to a lacy rash. Once the rash has appeared the child is no longer contagious unless fever or just not feeling well. There is no treatment for Fifth Disease and kids recover fairly quickly. Do not give any medication that contains aspirin but can give ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Pregnant mothers should be aware if they have been in contact with your child and contact their doctor. There are other rashes that can mimic this but usually have higher fever and other symptoms. If you have any questions, you may contact Nurse Eiting at 419-694-2211 ext 1102.

Congratulations to 8th graders, Trenton Brown, Lexi Dailey, Evelyn Egbert, and Claire Inbody, who were chosen to place the Riverdale Middle School wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery during their upcoming 8th grade Washington DC trip in May. Students were asked to write a 1 page essay on what placing the wreath would mean to them; a panel of educators read and ranked their essays, and these 4 students scored the highest on the essay contest. Please see Mrs. Wehrle tomorrow for additional details! Congratulations again to Trenton, Lexi, Evelyn, and Claire!

Riverdale Elementary welcomed Mr. Jeffrey Ebbeler, an accomplished author/illustrator, to our school today. We thoroughly enjoyed his presentations and teaching us how to draw. Many thanks to the Academic Boosters for sponsoring Mr. Ebbeler. It was a wonderful day of learning for all!
